With Red Bull doing the same at the second stops, as Hamilton closed back in to get within undercut range himself, it left Verstappen with the tricky proposition of holding off the Mercedes on fresher tyres at the end of the race.

But with track position an advantage at the Circuit of the Americas, Verstappen brought it home just over a second clear of his title rival. Speaking after the race, Mercedes boss Wolff was downbeat about the team's loss, but full of praise for Verstappen and Hamilton after what he viewed as two drivers performing at their very peak. The second time again and [it worked] to their advantage.

You could see that he had learned from the second stint not to damage the tyres too early, because he had something left at the end. Wolff explained that Mercedes weren't happy on the Medium tyre, and that they didn't think they'd have been able to finish the race had they tried to be as aggressive as Red Bull.

He brought the tyre in, remained calm even though we were six-and-a-half [seconds behind after the first stop], [and] in the second stop, eight-and-a-half seconds. That was brilliantly executed, but just not close enough at the end.

Hopefully, he and Hamilton are evenly matched and push each other. Also hope Williams continue their upwards trajectory. Reply posted by F1forever, at 7 Sep F1forever. If Mclaren can make a top car for next year then may be the best year for having British drivers at the top of the grid since the late 60s early 70s. Reply posted by magicrm, at 7 Sep magicrm. Please let's focus on what George has achieved, and can achieve, and not use this column as another chance to hit out at his team partner for next season. InScotland replied: I agree, but I think your words fall on deaf ears.

Suffice to say, dreams do come true kids. Hard work pays off. Reply posted by Celts, at 7 Sep Celts. Celts replied: Shame Hamilton doesn't want him anywhere near the team then!

He is only happy when he has an average teammate to make him look good by comparison Hope George shows him up. Just like Max is this season! More replies 20 down. All supremely talented young drivers. Maybe it's greedy hoping all four cars are competitive in But the prospect is ridiculously mouthwatering.

Wishing George all the success with Mercedes and growing to become a future champion.

I Am Not Lord Lucan replied: I second that but with the rules currently being blatantly rigged to help Redbull I don't know if we'll see George or Lewis winning races next year. More replies 10 down. It'll be interesting for sure. What's fascinating is just how long this took to happen; Russell has been tremendously patient all things considered. But Sakhir clearly changed everything; Russell could hardly fit into the car and he still thrashed Bottas.

No going back for Toto after that race and frankly Russell should have been in the car this year. Best of luck to him - he deserves it!

HappenedSoFast replied: He didn't trash Bottas. Bottas out qualified him. He did get in front of Bottas early on, but Bottas was closing him down before the first undercaut - where the team managed to increase his lead.

Bottas was closing him in again before the botched pit stops. And finally after the puncture, He finished behind Bottas. More replies 21 down. Comment posted by bigbaddog, at 7 Sep bigbaddog.

In Russell and Norris we have two superstars of F1, they are both moving up the grid as the Mclaren improves and George gets the seat he deserves. Its going to be a brilliant decade for British F1 fans. Eyes Wide Open replied: In fairness, the last couple of decades have been pretty good too.

Can't wait for a proper battle within Mercedes again! Think Hamilton will edge it but it won't be easy for him. More replies 16 down. Comment posted by Grumpywebbo, at 7 Sep Grumpywebbo. When Bottas was first signed it was off the back of impressive performances and numerous excellent qualifying laps, many said that he would prove how poor Hamilton really was.

That never came to pass and now those same people proclaim that he was only ever a No. He wasn't quick enough often enough to claim the No. Will GR be? Who knows? Reply posted by Meluhha, at 7 Sep Meluhha. Meluhha replied: Well said. I can definitely remember that.
