John Proctor seeks forgiveness in himself, God and the ones he effected. As a result, everyone in Salem behaved uniformly with the distress and anxiety of being accused of witchcraft. Likewise, Miller further touches on how cowardice is the dominant trait over the recessive trait of bravery in Salem. This is idea is magnified at the end of the play when Proctor — the innocent -- is accused of witchcraft and is confronted with the arduous task of signing a confession, admitting that he practiced witchcraft.
Arthur Miller created this play to show how similar it was to the Red Scare. Here, the reader can truly see how each character feels for one another and how Abigail truly despises Elizabeth for being the wife of John Proctor.
Since Abigail is a powerful figure amongst the youth of the community, she can use this power to achieve her personal vendetta of having Elizabeth hanged for witchcraft. Abigail, who begins the play strenuously objecting to the charges of witchraft, unwittingly stumbles upon a strategy for revenge as well as power.
